I can hear audio on my computer but my screen wont show the video ?

my laptop screen was broken a while ago so i hooked up and external monitor to my computer. all most all video types wont play there video on the screen but i can hear the audio. now my computer will show one type of video file but will only show the visual aspect once then im back to only being able to listen to the audio but not be able to see the video. but i can watch a video on the internet unless it is played through a windows video player. ah but through the 1 in unbroken part of the screen that is attached to the computer i can see the corner of the video playing fine whats going on?
