Thank you to everyone who already told me that PS games work on the PS2, but now I've found that some of them say they're for PSX. Is that ok for me to buy for him? This stuff confuses me. I guess I'm old school.

PSX is just another name for the first console. i noticed they started using that term when they released the PS ONE( smaller version with a detachable 7" screen). the only problem you may have with the ps1/psx games is finding memory cards for them because i don't think sony makes em anymore so if you see them snap em up. i always find em at flea markets and pawn shops.
If i remeber correctly, the PSX was an early HDD TV recorder, like TiVo, but only in Japan. In all other parts of the world, PSX refered to the original PlayStation and this term only came into use after the PS2 came out. So, yes, PSX games should be perfectly fine. :)
They would be fine. I'm sure someone made sure to point this out already, but just in case, make sure you have a PLAYSTATION MEMORY CARD. A Playstation 2 memory card WON'T WORK to save PLAYSTATION games. Anyway in the U.S. the PSX is just the Playstation(appearently in Japan it was a seperate system that was STILL the Playstation as far as games).
PSX is another name for Playstation they should work but you should lean towards PS2 games as much as possible. PSX games can date back to 1996. PS2 is more 2000-
